SALZBURG, AUSTRIA
September 13
Salzburg, made famous for her vast quantities of salt found in the mountains between Salzburg and Bavaria a few hundred years ago, is now basking in a mother lode of tourists. Around almost every corner, one can see Taxi's, Tours, and shops catering to tourists. People are willing to help us with eating, walking or understanding something we can't figure out because of the language barrier. If you speak German you have it made. If all you speak is English, the Austrians will help you.
Our first day was a great day of sightseeing. We arrived in town about an hour before our "Sound of Music" tour started at 2:00. The four of us had our own tour van with our personal tour guide/driver. He wasted no time making us feel comfortable as he talked on and on about the Sound of Music movie and about the real live people the movie portrayed.
In spite of the rain, we visited several places that were shown in the movie scenes that portrayed a slight variation of the real life Von Trapp family. We saw the lake where the canoe scene was shot; the gazebo where liesl ran around and many other places. Anyone desiring more can come take the tour. You would love it! But don't do it on a rainy day!
On the way back from a long drive into the hills and around the kitchen, we stopped at a nice roadside cafe and had dinner. Nancy and I tried a traditionally Salzburg dish that was a mushroom dumpling. The wild mushrooms grow in the nearby hills and the bread dumpling is hand made. It was delicious! We were glad that we chose something we had me er had before. Debby and Ron enjoyed a dish of Weinerschmitzel Cordon Bleu with stewed potatoes.
Our apartment was beautiful! Debby chose well in planning!
